Welcome!
Welcome to ThirdWaveWomen.org. This site has been designed to be a resource for women everywhere to air your thoughts, your dreams, your disappointments, your triumphs, your general observations or whatever else is on your mind.
Above all, it is designed for women to help other women - as members of the great "sisterhood."
In the year 2008, we women are living in an incredible time - in less than a century, the American woman has gone from being largely voiceless in society - not even being able to vote - to having a legitimate and realistic chance of holding the most powerful office in the world: President of the United States.
This is all a result of the courageous women who have gone before us. Brave pioneers like Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Gloria Steinem, Betty Friedan, Bella Abzug and more... women who by challenging barriers to equality - at great cost to themselves - paved the way for all women.
We have come very far since the days where women were considered to be no more than appendages to men - but there is yet a long way to go. In the spirit of those who have gone before us, we invite you to keep the conversation going by joining us here at ThirdWaveWomen.org.
For where there is unity, there is strength - and together... we can change the world.

What does today's Third Wave Woman think, feel, and want for her future? Does she like being called a "feminist?"
There has been a lot of debate about this among the women of today that say they would like to move on from some of the attitudes of the Second Wave of feminism to a new attitude of feminism--a transition from the Second Wave to the Third Wave--or is it the Second Wave Part II?
What are your thoughts? How do you want to be defined as a part of this new wave? This is your YOUR TIME TO DEFINE!! This is your THIRD WAVE. How will you keep the change coming?
The new focus is now on International Women’s Day:
I hope everyone was able to Celebrate Susan B. Anthony’s birthday in your cities.
Unfortunately, because of the many events surrounding the upcoming Presidential Primaries we were not able to coordinate the events in each city. Therefore we will look to the official International Women’s Day—which is coming up on March 8th, 2008. If you would like to sign up to organize the event in your city please contact Third Wave Women here to let us know that you will be getting the word out to women in your city. If you would like to be listed on the Third Wave Women site as a City Coordinator we will list your information, and any city information, you feel is important for the women that will come to your city’s event on March 8th, 2008. Or you can post it here on your own blog.
March 8th is a Saturday—we all should be able to get to our city centers or parks to join together in UNITY! The United Nations recognizes this day globally—we will meet in all US cities, but we would love to hear from our sisters internationally as well. We also welcome them, to join together, in their cities-- with us in UNITY –to KEEP THE CHANGE COMING! Spread the word to your sisters in London, Paris, Cairo, Brazil, Nairobi, Thailand, Pakistan, Korea, Tokyo, Sydney, Jerusalem, and Prague……. all international cities.
Start the wave now so we can come together on the 8th—as one—and reaffirm with one another our sisterhood—our bond! Remember—SHE AIN’T HEAVY—SHE’S MY SISTER!

Be a part of the THIRD WAVE of WOMEN generation ---making changes in the world today.
Susan B-- I wonder what you would think if you were here today on your birthday in 2008!
You would be proud that we are still standing up to derogatory comments against women--in 2007 there was the Rutgers Women's Basketball Team controversy. It was resolved and they all handled themselves so well.
A woman Presidential candidate was emerging ---a *strong* woman Presidential candidate who also commended the Rutgers Women for their strength to stand up to the derogatory comments and they also dared Senator Clinton to compete. It was women coming together --bonding in strength as women. Susan--you would have been so very proud!

Susan B. Anthony understood how important it was to come together during the tough times--the transitional times! And we enjoy the luxuries of living --of our natural human rights-- that were decades ago denied--do we take them for granted today? Have we forgotten? I hope not. We should not because there are small attempts in our 21st century that still challenge us --to take us back decades. Internationally we see our sisters in their own countries struggling to earn their rights to education, a voice in their own societies and governments, their futures and their children’s futures. We are strong women today! We’ve come a long way! Today is the day we hold Susan B Anthony in our hand—we hold her up high and strong In our fist and and give thanks (insert SB Anthony coin in hand now), celebrate her and say:
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SUSAN B. ANTHONY! !!
KEEP THE CHANGE (S) COMING!!!
Since I haven't found applause on these pages for Eve Ensler, I'll add my own. Eve is another remarkable woman to celebrate and thank from the bottom of my heart for her creativity and leadership. Whether or not you appreciate her writing, if you are in a room where women are reading the Vagina Monologues (celebrating ten years) to each other, you begin to feel an incredible sense of sisterhood through the shared laughter and tearful silence. And the stories all sound somehow familiar.
On the V-day website, Jane Fonda describes hearing Ensler's play for the first time as the day she felt feminism "rooted in her body" rather than just intellectually, and immediately follows that revelation with a description of hearing Eve read from the stories of over 200 women, and "never having laughed so hard," at some of those honest moments.
Indeed, if old Sue were around today, she would marvel at both how far we've come, and what a climb we still have in front of us.
Annie Shreffler
Annie thanks for writing ---because this website and Third Wave Women is all about the sisterhood that we share. Lately it has been on my mind a lot. I personally keep encountering women, in my own life that should be shining examples as mentors for a woman my age--but they are not there --they've disappointed me. It was the main reason I formed this organization/website.
I dont know if you ,or anyone else, has encountered a moment in your life when you needed to call on a woman in your life--she could've been a colleague, family member or a new acquaintance that you were turning to that you asked to help you.
The question is--how did she respond to you? Or did she? If she did respond--was it immediate and positive? Or slow and with an "I'll get back to you attitude." Making you feel like you were an imposition to her. Or maybe you felt she was threatened by you in the workplace and became competitive with you.
If you were lucky--you found a woman that when you reached out to her--she opened her door sat down with you, looked you in the eye and really listened to you --without interruption; or she answered her phone--and patiently listened to you--again without interruption-- and then replied, how can I help you? Or if you sent her a letter or email, she responded to it ,within a reasonable amount of time, with some careful consideration to your email or letter in her reply--considering you and how she could help mentor you--for all that you are. So you can reach your full potential.
And you will (or would do) the same for a young woman one day if she is standing before you asking for your help, opinion or advice. You will look at her, listen and consider what she has said and offer her, without judgement, your best advice. It is the best way to nurture the seed and continue to keep the change coming.
We refer to ourselves as sisters--but we are not really blood related at all. As Rebecca Walker said in a 2001 Curve magazine article --she said, “the bonds you create are just as important and just as powerful as the bonds that you are born into.” I could not agree more--we are sisters--and we need to take care of one another. Remember.....she ain't heavy, she's my sister!
Women are proving to be the deciding factor in this race. And it is because it is clear that Hillary Clinton is showing the country that she speaks to them about what every American is facing --because she cares and she has done her homework in the Senate and as a Public Servant. When other candidates were worried about damage control to their campaigns--she was on the Hill fighting for those that were about to lose their homes to forclosure. And quite frankly--she has takent the lead on many of the critical issues before America today--the other candidates have followed when they have noted that it might be best for their campaign to do so. I can hear them now, "Uh Oh Hillary has been working on this issue now for months--if I dont do something on it soon --it will look like I dont care more than she does." And so then they scramble to look like they have been working on it for months--when they have not.pay attention! She has been there for America and she has been one step ahead of all the Presidential candidates. THAT(!) is leadership! And you cannot fool the working class people of America--that is why she is winning their votes. Because when you are in trouble economically--you know who is out there helping you and who is not!
New Yorkers knew it when she helped them through September 11th and the recession before and after it.
This is ONE SMART WOMAN!!! And she is one TOUGH WOMAN! And she speaks for all Americans.
Please go to Hillary Clinton .com and sign up to help the campaign in what ever way you can.
Help her and women break the glass ceiling. Because in the end--it will not only help women--it will be good for all Americans. As Charles Sumner said,
" Equality of Rights is the First of Rights."
She is on a Roll from Pennsylvania to Pennsylvania Ave
